Classes at River Knits

Instructor Amanda Gill teaches knitting in the round.

Testimonials from our class members:

"I loved Heather's Beginning Sock Knitting class!  Hers was the first knitting class I ever took and I highly recommend the class and Heather as an instructor. Not only in she *extremely* patient, but she creates a wonderful class culture that invites questions, conversation, and laughter.  I looked forward to her class every week, and when it was over I spent my summer happily knitting as many socks as I could."
~ Karis

"I never had a pair of socks that fit so well until I took the sock class and knit a pair to the measurement of my feet!  I love being able to make socks in the colors and weights I want.  There is a huge variety in sock yarns.  Also, the small size of the project makes it ideal to try out new stitches and techniques.  I am on my third pair (since March).  I plan to make a few pair as "stocking" stuffers for Chirstmas (if I can knit any that I actually want to give up!).  Sock class is a fun way to spend a few evenings with like-minded knitters!"
~ Cheryl

Class Policies

  • Payment reserves your space in the class.  If you cannot attend the class, a full refund will be given if you notify us any time prior to one week before the start date of the class.  No refunds or rain checks will be given after the one week cutoff date.
  • Materials for classes at River Knits must be purchased at River Knits so that we can remain in business to keep offering you more great classes!
  • Classes may be cancelled at the instructor’s discretion if minimum enrollment is not reached.
  • Knitting Survival Kit – In addition to the specific materials required for your class, it is helpful to bring a “basic knitting kit” with you to most classes beyond Knit Basics.  This kit should include a small pair of scissors, stitch markers, stitch holders, a crochet hook, a darning needle, pencil and “post-its”, and a tape measure.  Having these basic supplies on hand before class starts helps you have more time to learn from the instructor during class.**  (Plus your teachers really like the following:  Amanda – York Peppermint Patties; Michelle – dark chocolate covered cherries; Heather – Cheetos.)

Dream in Color Dream Club
First Shipment Here!

Michelle’s first “Dream Club” meets Saturday September 11, from 1-3pm.  This is a new free knit along!  This month’s pattern is the Airy Hat featuring Dream in Color hand dyed sock yarn.  You will love it!

Dream in color hat

The August selection includes a Flash Dyed colorway called Rose The Flash Dye technique was devised by Veronica Van to create a vivid, flashes of color that are intended to stand out and make a statement!

The pattern that accompanies this skein is called the Airy Hat. It calls for #3 dpns and a sewing up needle. This is a great pattern for either someone new to hats or just a great way to use sock yarns for something other than socks! Plus you'll only use about half of the skein, so you'll have enough leftover for another hat or maybe a pair of fingerless mitts...?

These kits are here now and when they’re gone they’re gone.  I will not be able to get more.  These kits are strictly first come first served.  So get ‘em while they’re hot!

Dream in color yarn

Questions – “Can I purchase the kit and not attend the Dream Club Knit Along?”  Yes, but you probably won’t have quite as much fun!

“Can I attend the Dream Club Knit Along and not purchase the kit?” Only if the kits are sold out; and then we would still ask that you purchase another substitute that we would be glad to help you select.  Since the instruction is free, we have to find some way to stay in business! ;-)

Don’t miss this chance to come have a great time – the yarn is delightful, Michelle will be there to guide you through the patterns and you know the company will be the best anywhere in town!  For about the price of dinner and a movie you even get something to take home and KEEP!

Next Dream Club Meets October 9, 1-3pm.  Groovy Slipper Sock Pattern

Knit Night will take a summer break.
Fun, free, purely social night to visit with fellow knitters.  Bring your current project! Everyone welcome.

Knit Night is a social gathering hosted by River Knits on the second Monday of each month from 7:00-9:00pm. Knit Night is a free event that is not instructional based but for the purpose of gathering together with other knitters for social enjoyment and fellowship. Knitters are encouraged to bring their current project and enjoy visiting and meeting new friends through knitting. All skill levels welcome! Crocheters welcome too!

Sock Club - last Saturday of the Month (usually)
Please note that Sock Club is on hold for the remainder of the summer. We will be offering a new club this Fall!

Knitting for Others
At River Knits

River Knits Charity Knitting meets every Wednesday from 12:00-2:00pm.  Our group actively supports CIC (Children in Common) and Mittens for Akkol throughout the year.  CIC focuses on clothing for toddlers and preschool children living in orphanages in Russia, while Mittens for Akkol seeks to assist the older children at a specific orphanage in Akkol, Kazakhstan.

This year every child and teen at the orphanage in Akkol will receive a new pair of hand knit socks from Grandfather Frost.  We were delighted to be a part of that effort.  Even if you don’t have time to join our knitting group on Wednesdays, you may always drop off hand knit donations that River Knits will distribute.  If you would like to support these groups, both ask for mostly wool (or other animal fiber) content because these items are the warmest.  Socks, slippers, mittens, vests, sweaters and hats are all greatly appreciated!

Non-wool items will be distributed locally to groups in need such as the Salvation Army, Lafayette Urban Ministry and Youth Underground.River Knits also supports the Trinity Nursing Center by providing baby caps to families in our community. Washable newborn caps for normal (not premie) infants are requested as well as socks or booties and baby blankets

The Charity Knitting Group at River Knits was interviewed and photographed.
