Classes at River Knits

Instructor Amanda Gill teaches knitting in the round.

Please register for classes early. We reserve the right to cancel a class one week before the class date if minimum enrollment is not reached. Don't wait to sign up!
Class Policy

Classes at River Knits are designed to teach one or more new techniques. Sometimes classes are technique based only and the objective of the class is simply to learn and practice a new technique, such as cables or entrelac. Sometimes the instructor will choose to use a commercially available pattern or design one herself to highlight the technique(s) being taught in that specific class, such as learning Fair Isle by making a 2-color hat. Some classes are one session classes while others may be 4 or even more sessions in length.

Private Lessons Also Available
Private Lessons currently are available through Amanda Gill and Heather Wenig, River Knits instructors.

**Knitting Survival Kit – In addition to the specific materials required for your class, it is helpful to bring a “basic knitting kit” with you to most classes beyond Knit Basics.  This kit should include a small pair of scissors, stitch markers, stitch holders, a crochet hook, a darning needle, pencil and “post-its”, and a tape measure.  Having these basic supplies on hand before class starts helps you have more time to learn from the instructor during class.**  (Your teachers really like the following too:  Amanda – York Peppermint Patties; Michelle – dark chocolate covered cherries; Heather – Cheetos.)

Top-Down Sweaters, Beginner to Expert

Tuesdays, June 23, 30, July 14, 28, August 11, 25, September 8, 22, 7-9 pm

Instructor: Amanda Gill

Whether you’ve never knit a sweater or knit a million sweaters, this class is for you! The focus will be on top-down, seamless raglan construction which still leaves lots of options open for creativity. If this is your first sweater, a simple, top-down raglan pullover is perfect for you! Are you an advanced beginner or intermediate knitter? Try a cardigan with or without color patterns, lace or cables. Are you an adventurous knitter? Let’s try steeking that cardigan. You choose the yarn, size and details of your sweater, and I’ll be here to guide you along the way.

With this class, we are trying a new approach: the voucher system. You can choose to attend just one, two, three, or up to all eight of the class sessions, and you pay only for those you attend at the price of $15/session. When you sign up, you will receive a voucher card indicating how many sessions you have signed up for. You must bring this card to each class session. You also must have an active email account to attend this class so I can contact everyone a couple of days before each session to verify attendence.

Materials: Knitting from the Top by Barbara G. Walker OR one of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s books, yarn and needles of your choice (for ideas on how much yarn you’ll need, please consult the Knitter’s Handy Guide to Yarn Requirements).

Cost: $15/session

Events at River Knits

Hosting Knit Night every second Monday of each month at 7pm.

Knit Night is a social gathering hosted by River Knits on the second Monday of each month from 7:00-9:00pm. Knit Night is a free event that is not instructional based but for the purpose of gathering together with other knitters for social enjoyment and fellowship. Knitters are encouraged to bring their current project and enjoy visiting and meeting new friends through knitting. All skill levels welcome! Crocheters welcome too!

Knitting for Others
At River Knits

River Knits Charity Knitting meets every Wednesday from 12:00-2:00pm.  Our group actively supports CIC (Children in Common) and Mittens for Akkol throughout the year.  CIC focuses on clothing for toddlers and preschool children living in orphanages in Russia, while Mittens for Akkol seeks to assist the older children at a specific orphanage in Akkol, Kazakhstan.

This year every child and teen at the orphanage in Akkol will receive a new pair of hand knit socks from Grandfather Frost.  We were delighted to be a part of that effort.  Even if you don’t have time to join our knitting group on Wednesdays, you may always drop off hand knit donations that River Knits will distribute.  If you would like to support these groups, both ask for mostly wool (or other animal fiber) content because these items are the warmest.  Socks, slippers, mittens, vests, sweaters and hats are all greatly appreciated!

Non-wool items will be distributed locally to groups in need such as the Salvation Army, Lafayette Urban Ministry and Youth Underground.River Knits also supports the Trinity Nursing Center by providing baby caps to families in our community. Washable newborn caps for normal (not premie) infants are requested as well as socks or booties and baby blankets

The Charity Knitting Group at River Knits was interviewed and photographed recently.
