Classes
at River Knits
*Materials
for classes taught at River Knits must be purchased at River Knits* AUGUST Beginning Knitting It’s time you learned to knit…or finally convinced that friend to learn to knit. J This class is for anyone who has ever looked at something a friend, family or coworker has made and thought “I wish I could make stuff like that.” In the first two hours, you will learn to cast on, to bind off, the knit stitch and hopefully the purl stitch. In the last hour, you will be able to start one of the following projects: a hat, a scarf or a cowl. Materials will depend on which of the three project options you choose:
Magic Loop The Magic Loop method allows you to knit in the round using one long circular needle rather than double pointed needles or 2 circular needles. If you’re one who has struggled with double pointed needles or if you just want to learn another technique for your repertoire, this is the class for you. Materials: 1 ball Encore Worsted, 1 size 6 40” circular needle
Knit a Sweater, Any Sweater You know you want to. Come knit socks with us! J Socks are great projects—portable, inexpensive, giftable, warm, lovely. In Beginning Sock Knitting, you will learn to use gauge to custom fit your socks, how to turn a heel and how to close the toe with Kitchener Stitch. We’ll start with sport weight yarn, but the pattern we use is easily adapted to any weight of yarn that is calling to your feet. Materials: pattern provided by instructor at time of registration, size 2 double pointed needles (size 1 ½ if you think of yourself as a “loose knitter”), 400 yards of sport weight yarn (not cotton), pencil, tapestry needle, row counter, 12” or so of scrap yarn
Help Session How to Read a Knitting Pattern I occasionally hear from knitters that they’d like to branch out and try new projects but they just can’t understand the language and symbolism of the patterns. Join us in this session to demystify the patterns and expand your horizons! Materials: pattern you’ve been wanting to try, yarn & needles as described in pattern, notebook, pen/pencil, highlighter or highlighter tape OCTOBER Beginning Knitting It’s time you learned to knit…or finally convinced that friend to learn to knit. Help Session Cozy Cowl using a Provisional Cast On Cowls are gaining popularity as a stylish and functional alternative to scarves. While some cowls are knit in the round, this pattern is knit flat. We will use a provisional cast and join with the Kitchener Stitch. This method of casting on is a fun skill to add and is useful in lace knitting, toe up socks and many other projects. Materials: pattern provided in class, size 11 24” circular needle, 2 skeins bulky yarn, tape measure, row counter Mittens! Mittens are a great project for learning to knit in the round with double pointed needles. They also make great gifts for your friends and family or for pampering yourself. Keep warm this winter with your own handmade mittens! Materials: pattern provided by instructor, 200 yards worsted weight yarn, double pointed needles in size to achieve 5 st/in, row counter, tape measure, tapestry needle, about 12” of scrap yarn Help Session Beginning Knitting It’s time you learned to knit…or finally convinced that friend to learn to knit. Events at River Knits Dream in Color Dream Club The August selection includes a Flash Dyed colorway called Rose The Flash Dye technique was devised by Veronica Van to create a vivid, flashes of color that are intended to stand out and make a statement! The pattern that accompanies this skein is called the Airy Hat. It calls for #3 dpns and a sewing up needle. This is a great pattern for either someone new to hats or just a great way to use sock yarns for something other than socks! Plus you'll only use about half of the skein, so you'll have enough leftover for another hat or maybe a pair of fingerless mitts...? These kits are here now and when they’re gone they’re gone. I will not be able to get more. These kits are strictly first come first served. So get ‘em while they’re hot! Questions – “Can I purchase the kit and not attend the Dream Club Knit Along?” Yes, but you probably won’t have quite as much fun! “Can I attend the Dream Club Knit Along and not purchase the kit?” Only if the kits are sold out; and then we would still ask that you purchase another substitute that we would be glad to help you select. Since the instruction is free, we have to find some way to stay in business! ;-) Don’t miss this chance to come have a great time – the yarn is delightful, Michelle will be there to guide you through the patterns and you know the company will be the best anywhere in town! For about the price of dinner and a movie you even get something to take home and KEEP! Next Dream Club Meets October 9, 1-3pm. Groovy Slipper Sock Pattern
River Knits Charity Knitting meets every Wednesday from 12:00-2:00pm. Our group actively supports CIC (Children in Common) and Mittens for Akkol throughout the year. CIC focuses on clothing for toddlers and preschool children living in orphanages in Russia, while Mittens for Akkol seeks to assist the older children at a specific orphanage in Akkol, Kazakhstan.
