These
stylish scarves go beyond basic garter stitch to add a little kick to your
wardrobe. A few of them make wonderful last-minute gifts that will be met
with much appreciation. Others will require a bit more time, but every moment
will bring great knitting pleasure. But the best part is that each of them
requires only one ball of yarn.

The center looks like waves and represents both the literal ocean and the figurative ocean of time, both of which are crossed numerous times throughout the book series. The first border pattern is called Horseshoe Lace, which brings to mind horses and Jamie. But, this pattern also looks like rolling hills or mountains-- the landscape of the Scottish Highlands. The last two border patters are a Celtic knot motif and Thistle Leaves, together symbolizing Claire's wedding ring. Finally, the points of the knitted edging stand around the perimeter of the shawl, representing the circle of standing stones.
